Norfolk State University Station, TIDE Lightrail, Norfolk, VA
Client: City of Norfolk Cultural Affairs
Lead Artist: Kyungmi Shin
Painted steel & aluminum sculpture
20'h x 16'w x 16'd

In our design for this project, we were inspired by the history and legacy of Norfolk Station University where the lightrail transit station was located. Norfolk State University is a black college with an amazing history of leadership, and our design of a floor medallion and the glass windscreen were inspired by the Norfolk State University's history and vision.
The glass mosaic medallion inspired by NSU school colors and statement of “character, values and strengths” is embedded street level of the station. The sandblasted images on the windscreen were created using historical photographs representing students, faculty, and Dr. Lyman Brooks (president 1938-1975) and Dr. Strong (first top graduating student of Norfolk State) have been sandblasted into the glass.
