This two part sculptural artwork/ shade structures was created for the CFT Gateway Center, a mixed use development in Pasadena. The design was inspired by the site’s anchor business, Panda Inn, which was the original restaurant before the Panda Express was born and grown into the Panda Restaurant Group. The cloud used in the traditional Chinese designs were interpreted as a pixelated modernist form to reflect the digital age. The design also celebrate the site’s neighboring neo-formalist architectural landmark by Edward Durell Stone located east of the project site. Patterns from different cultures represented in the city of Pasadena’s population were inserted into the panels to create shades.
